The Knit Group will meet on April 12 at ten o’clock in the Dining Room.

We have been asked to make some hats for hospital patients undergoing cancer treatment. This will mean that we will certainly need some new hands for this project. The hats can be knit, crocheted, or sewn from regular cloth or fleece. To do this and still maintain our projects for others such as Alternatives for Battered Women, Sojourner House, Rochester Public School #9, Visiting Nurses and Hope Hall we will certainly need more Helping Hands.

Please let us know if you can assist us by coming to the April meeting or by emailing or calling me. Perfect attendance at our meetings is not required. However, partaking in coffee, cookies and conversation is encouraged.

Public Policy Advocacy Day will be celebrated by AAUW/NYS in Albany on Tuesday, April 17, Equal Pay Day. We will be advocating for issues such as pay equity, violence against women and children, child care, and reproductive rights.

The day will begin at 10:00 with a welcome from Assemblywomen Ellen Jaffee and Addie Russell. At 10:30 we will be briefed on effective advocacy techniques from a professional lobbyist and a member of the state legislature. A panel discussion on the key topics of pay equity and women’s and family issues will conclude the morning program.
Each branch will schedule it’s own meetings with it’s respective senators and representatives between 12:30 and 3:00pm. The Assembly will also issue a proclamation for AAUW in the afternoon.
Please make your reservation to attend this important day in Albany, April 17, 2012, at http://aauwppd2012 .eventbrite.com
If you cannot attend the trip to Albany, be aware that Rochester now is having a nationally known investigative journalist and author David Cay Johnston speaking on Equal Pay at the First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Road South on April 17 at 7pm.
On March 24, Mary Jo Colligan will come to us. Mary Jo is the New York State Director of Dress A Girl Around the World. She will talk about the program, its history and goal. She and others from the local group will display sample dresses and talk about their participation in the program.
On April 27 former member Linda DeVeronica will visit Table Talk and tell us about all the changes at St. Joseph’s Village. Plan to come to both of these upcoming Table Talk presentations. I am quoting Shirley Miller, “you always learn something at Table Talk”.

Join us at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa in Fairport, located on a beautiful hill outside Rochester, for a weekend of learning, inspiration, and fun. This year’s theme, “The Women’s History Trail – Walking In Their Footsteps,” celebrates the historic sites and contributions of women in central and western New York to the Women’s Rights Movement.

If you arrive early Friday afternoon, you can start with a tour of the Susan B. Anthony House and after tour the GRAB Perkin’s Mansion. Take a stroll on the various paths on the hotel grounds before the President’s Reception, which precedes the President’s Dinner and keynote address by Kathy Kelm, head of “The Big Teal Machine,” AAUW’s volunteer lobby corps in Washington, D.C. After dinner join members from around the state in Military Bridge, a social mixer so well-received last year that we are playing it again. No bridge knowledge necessary.

After a leisurely Saturday breakfast, you will participate in the annual business meeting of AAUW-NYS: hearing about the accomplishments of the past year, asking any questions you may have, and electing officers for the next- two year terms. The meeting will be followed first by a presentation by Dot McLane, National Association Director-at-Large, and then by District Caucuses, thus on all levels of AAUW beyond the branches.

At the Awards Luncheon branches will be recognized for their achievements during the year and we will hear two LAF speakers, Edith Arana, plaintiff in Walmart vs. Dukes and Noreen Farrell, Director of Equal Rights Advocate, a nonprofit law firm.
The Saturday workshops will feature historically significant individuals and groups in the progress of women in New York State. The four choices will include: “The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Influence,” “Harriet Tubman: Champion of Freedom,” “Uncrowned Queens: African American Women of Buffalo”, and “Elizabeth Cady Stanton Slept and Worked Here,” After the workshops we will come together for “The Big Picture: Women and the U.N. Millennium Development” with Jane Roberts, and recognitions for My Sister’s Keeper.
Be sure to check out the offerings in the LAF silent auction and the branch and state exhibits. Relax with yoga, or swim laps for this year’s international fundraiser before the cocktail hour, entertainment, and installation dinner. The speaker will be Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, a longtime friend of AAUW. After dinner we will participate in a dialogue on The Future of the Women’s History Trail.
Sunday will begin with the Counterpart Breakfast, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet with branch and state officers or to spend informal time with our speakers. This year we will have a second workshop session on Sunday morning, with a choice of “Chautauqua Women: Inspiration and Influence,” “The Seneca Army Depot Peace Encampment,” “The Temp Economy: From Kelly Girls to Permatemps,” and “Clean Money,Clean Elections.”
The Branch Showcase this year will be a special presentation by the Bath Branch of “Momoirs,” a delightful entertainment and a successful fundraiser. The final luncheon will offer us goals for the future with “2020: Project Women” and calls to the Summer Leadership Conference and the 2013 State Convention.

Call 585-244-8890 for registration and details!

Join us Saturday, April 7, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm (All or any part of the day)

We will “sew” dresses and make dolls to be sent around the world by the Dress A Girl program to be given to girls of all ages who are trapped in the cycle of poverty which makes them vulnerable to becoming victims of human trafficking. http://www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com/

We will collect donations at the AAUW and also invite you to come out and participate on our “sew” day. You do not need to know how to sew. There are jobs for everyone related to the completion of each dress and doll. For more information visit the websites of Dress A Girl Around The World and Angels of Mercy.

If you can help us with any of the following it would be greatly appreciated.

Small sewing apples / Yarn (in neutral colors) /Washcloths / Elastic / Fabric (no see through) Scarves / Pillow cases / Thread / Bias tape / Rick Rack / Pins / Buttons / Needles / Fiber fill / Ribbon / Scissors / Fabric / Pillow Cases

We are looking to borrow just for the day: portable sewing machines and sergers, two irons and boards. Please check your sewing boxes and supplies. Donations can be brought to GRAB/AAUW anytime up to and including April 7. The washcloths that were not the right color, the tablecloth and/or pillowcases you received as gifts and never used and the fabric left from projects you have been planning to do something with can find a purpose on Saturday.

We are asking that you take any equipment you bring with you home at the end of the day or when you leave or make arrangements for it to be returned to you by calling us. We do not have storage available and we want everything returned promptly and safely.

Any supplies/materials not used will be donated to Dress A Girl to aid them in producing dresses for distribution.

If you plan to join us please call GRAB/AAUW at 244-8890 and ask Felice to add your name to the list. Remember to tell her if you will be with us for the entire day or which part of the day. Please call by Wednesday, April 4.

I was at a Dress A Girl sewing day last week and they made beautiful dresses to be distributed to girls in the Rochester area for Easter. If you are familiar with the Polly Flinders dresses from a while back they were very much in that style. They were beautiful.
